It is the single most important question: Is vaping safe? Despite a mountain of research pointing to low health risks associated with vaping compared to smoking; a definitive answer remains elusive. But researchers behind a new multi-site international study of the health effects of vaping hope to remedy that and need your help.
The VERITAS (Vaping effects: real-world international surveillance) Cohort Study is headed by Dr. Riccardo Polosa out of CoEHAR, the Center of Excellence for Harm Reduction, Catania. The lead scientist and global project manager is Dr. Carl V. Phillips.
In this episode of RegWatch hear Dr. Phillips explain why the VERITAS Study is by far the most substantial study of the health effects of vaping (in the absence of smoking,) and will provide invaluable information for vapers, smokers, and policymakers.
You could play a critical role, find out how.

E315 - HAZARD OR BENEFIT? | UNPACKING CANADA’S NEW VAPING REGS (2020) | REGWATCH (LIVE)
Wednesday Jul 15, 2020
Wednesday Jul 15, 2020
*Guest: Sam Tam, President of the Canada Vaping Association - In the effort to stem youth use of vaping products, Health Canada announced its final Vaping Products Promotion Regulations, which set out measures to further restrict the advertising and promotion of vaping products to youth. Central to the government’s approach is a strict requirement to display “health warnings” on all vaping products, promotions, and point of sale materials.
While overall the new regulations are welcome by industry, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for stakeholders to accept, what may be considered as the “original sin” of the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act; the enshrinement of vaping as a “health hazard,” rather than as a tool for harm reduction.
The notion that vaping is a “health hazard” imbues the regulatory framework and nowhere does one find a comparison of the potential health benefits of vaping to the known dangers of smoking—what is hazardous to health could never provide a health benefit, so the argument goes.
Joining us today on RegWatch is Sam Tam, President of the Canadian Vaping Association. Hear his thoughts on Health Canada’s latest round of regulations and learn what the impact could be on Canada’s $1.36 billion vaping industry.

*Guest: Dr. Colin Mendelsohn, Founding Chairman of the Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Assoc.
It was a surprise decision issued by Australia’s Minister of Health to ban the personal importation of liquid nicotine for vaping beginning on July 1. The order was issued on June 19, leaving little time for harm reduction activists and a coalition of MPs to mount an effective challenge to a law, which many agree, could drive tens of thousands of vapers back to smoking.
Under growing pressure, Health Minister Greg Hunt decided on June 27 to delay the ban on importing nicotine. However, the fight to legalize vaping is far from over.
Joining us today on RegWatch is Dr. Colin Mendelsohn, Founding Chairman of the Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association and member of the Expert Advisory Group that develops the Australian national smoking cessation guidelines.
Why did the Australian government issue the ban? What impact would it have had on public health? How did the vaping community mobilize against the ban? Were there surprising allies in the fight? And, what’s next in the fight to legalize vaping in Australia?

He’s a secret, wrapped up in an enigma, and smothered in secret sauce. Who is he?
Mike Peterson from “Vaping and the Mic” describes him as “the onion chef of Twitter.” Vapers.org.uk says his “gritty distinctive style is ever-readable.” And THR advocate Ivanna Awrey exclaims: “Bless your crankiness, Kevin Crowley!”
Joining us today for a special edition of RegWatch is the man himself, Kevin Crowley. The founder of the most-comprehensive pro-vaping resource on the web: vapinglinks.blog. The sharp edge on the @Vapingit Twitter account. And the man whose work advocating for vaping is so impactful, researchers mistake him as a bot. Yes, a bot!

*Guest: Matt Culley, Vaping Activist and YouTube Content Creator
There’s no doubt the U.S. vaping industry faces a public perception problem of gargantuan proportions. While advocates maintain (and research backs up) that vaping is a safer alternative to smoking, everyday anti-vaping forces meet continued success in their effort to permanently poison the public understanding of vaping.
Compounding the problem is a simple fact: vapers are not a monolithic group drawn from one political perspective or party. How then should the vaping movement activate politically in this U.S. presidential election in order to meet what is clearly is a political threat i.e. flavor bans, taxation, and other onerous regulations?
Joining us today on RegWatch is Matt Culley, a prominent vaping activist and virtuoso of vaping product review videos on YouTube. Known as Matt From SMM, he’s amassed near 300,000 subscribers and 60 million video views. Culley is one of the first product reviewer superstars to venture into the vaping advocacy space, bringing a strong ethical voice and his support for progressive values to bear.
Is there a winning message to persuade politicians and the public about the virtues of vaping?

*Guest: Dr. Derek Yach, President of Foundation for a Smoke-Free World
Not long ago, tobacco control researchers and public health officials openly discussed a possible worldwide “endgame” to combustible tobacco use, thus preventing the death of up to one billion smokers by end of this century. But today, the focus on endgame is forgotten as the tobacco control movement intensifies efforts to eradicate vaping, the only technology proven both scalable and appealing to smokers as a viable alternative to smoking.
Tobacco control fixates on preventing up-take of smoking and complete cessation of nicotine use. While technologies like vaping, represent the principles of reduced risk and harm reduction.
Joining us today on RegWatch is Dr. Derek Yach, President of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (FSFW) and former World Health Organization (WHO) cabinet director and executive director for noncommunicable diseases and mental health where he was deeply involved with the development of the world’s treaty on tobacco control, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
At the forefront of global debate, hear Dr. Yach discuss the promise of tobacco harm reduction; why the WHO appears so vehemently opposed to harm reduction strategies; and whether increasing attacks on vaping (science and policy) and the reaction to crisis (youth epidemic, EVALI, and COVID19) have increased harm due to tobacco-related disease.

The fight to save vaping has always been a David versus Goliath struggle. Facing countless regulatory hurdles, the U.S. vaping industry mostly comes up short when seeking relief from the courts for what it believes to be arbitrary and capricious rulemaking by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
With FDA poised (yet again) to deliver a death blow to the U.S. vaping industry via its Pre-market Tobacco Application process, a lawsuit championed by Big Time Vapes Inc. and the United States Vaping Association Inc. could stave off disaster if the plaintiffs successfully argue, before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, that Congress ceded too much authority to the executive branch when it passed the Tobacco Control Act of 2009. An authority used by the FDA to deem vaping products subject to FDA regulation.
In this episode of RegWatch we are joined by USVA’s lawyer Jerad Najvar to discuss the intricacies of the case, including whether the “deeming” authority is so extreme that it’s unconstitutional, and if Congress failed in its duty when it delegated power to legislate to the FDA with little guidance and no restraint.

*Guest: Phil Busardo, celebrated YouTube show co-host and vape reviewer - Over the years the anti-vaping movement honed the tactics of creating mayhem and misery for those who rely on vaping as a tool for harm reduction. For vapers, wading through lies and half-truths has long been the daily norm. Yet the mendacity seems to be getting worse, as ideologues in the war on vaping capitalize on recent health scares to plot new attacks intended to stamp-out vaping for good.
In this episode of RegWatch we are joined by Phil Busardo, celebrated YouTube show co-host and prolific vape reviewer. Hear Busardo share his aggravation over the mind-bending hypocrisy of the anti-vaping movement and learn what he thinks could be a winning strategy for vaping.
